Happy Houndstooth Mistakes

Last summer, while we  (the design team at Mata Traders) were looking over the trend forecast, one of the interns had her heart set on houndstooth. This traditional geometric print has been seen all over the fashion world and we decided to try to make  our own version of the pattern.  At one point she mentioned that she was having difficulty finding the repeat. I spent an afternoon trying to not only find it for her but to teach her how to find it on her own. While doing so, I made a mistake and it came out like the print you see now. I immediately laughed because all I could see were cats!

Hundreds of cats were repeating on my computer screen and together we decided this was a fantastic twist to the classic houndstooth: It would now be our Catstooth pattern!  I kept thinking about how my friend Haley, a feline lover, would possibly walk into work wearing this dress. She would subtly state her love of cats while still looking work appropriate. This was a classic happy mistake moment that is now available not only on the Mata Traders site under the Half Moon Dress Catstooth, but on ModCloth as well as the Curriculum Vitae Dress (ModCloth even has plus sizes).

Pinterest Surprise!

I don't know about y'all, but I have a slight obsession with Pinterest. I especially love when I come across my own designs on Pinterest, like this print I designed for Mata Traders, a fair trade fashion company based in Chicago, IL.  I found these images on 5PoundApparel's Pinterest board labeled "Vintage Inspired", which is dedicated to styling vintage with fair trade in mind.  They are a great company that believes that a business that gives back can change the world!

I love seeing my designs out in the world and on people! Get ready, because this is only the beginning. In the next few weeks a bunch of my designs for Mata Traders will be out and about!

Closer Look: Kristina Lahde

I recently came across the artwork of Kristina Lahde, a Canadian artist. Her project "Beyond Measure"   was shown at a solo show, in Toronto. My reaction, could be summed up in one phrase - "For the love of tape measures!" The combination of working with this tool on a regular basis with my own work and my obsession with patterns (and optical illusion) had me needing to share this work with you all.

Marimekko offers free desktop wallpaper

Marimekko is a wonderful Finnish textile haven, that I had the opportunity of visiting during the summer of 2009. They are known for their clean, creative Scandinavian look and, lets be honest, I am slightly obsessed with them. Their patterns are always so vivid, colorful, and ever changing! Lucky for us, they offer a free downloadable desktop wallpaper which are all beautiful!

I hope you download one of these babies and drool over them as I have!
